Division Using Base Ten

Many parent wonder about how math is done now days, so we wanted to take a minute to show you how we use base ten to meet the fifth grade standards for understanding division. The following is a video of how base ten is modeled to solve three digits divided by a two digit number.

We use base ten blocks in class to do this, but it gets pretty laborious. Here are some examples of that:

So in order to make the Base Ten Model more efficient, we use base ten grids instead.
This is how that looks:

Ask your child to explain to you how this works, they've really got the hang of it.

 Extensions newsletter article

Dear Families:

In order to ensure that all students have access to a challenge in school, your student now has access to a new Seesaw Classroom called AL -- 5th grade.

In this Seesaw classroom, there will be several math and literacy extensions posted for each week’s curriculum on Monday morning. If students choose to complete them, they can submit them on Seesaw. They are not required for your student but are a challenge that they can participate in.

Amy Rountree, your school’s Advanced Learning Specialist, will post the extensions each week and will review any work submitted. At the end of the week, all of the activities will be archived so that there will not be a large backlog of assignments in the class.

If you have questions or concerns about this new opportunity for your student, you can contact Amy at aerountree@madison.k12.wi.us

Art Conferences

 From Ms. Castaneda Tucker (Maestra):

Greetings to Randall Elementary Families, I'm happy to be joining the Racoon clan this year as the Art teacher at Randall.
Fifth graders will be creating works that should last a while, as I am teaching them about sustainability in the arts through art production. So far they have created their own personal artist stamp, and we are currently creating personal journals.
Fourth graders have started out the year repurposing unused toys into Alebrijes (Spirit figures).
The Third graders have created very colorful Fantasy Landscapes and we are just beginning to create batik Peace Banners.
If you would like a conference time with me, please email me at: pcastanedatu@madison.k12.wi.us
All the best this year,
Patricia (Maestra) Castaneda Tucker
