What's Up in 5th Grade?






Math                                                                                

  • This week we continued to work with one another on story problems, using estimation to help us find reasonable answers, and discussed  how to handle remainders in ways that made logical sense. 
  • We took another Bridges Interim assessment to check our understanding of math this year.
  • We started our May number corner activities which will include a lot of graphing/coordinate grid work and conversion work using the customary system of measurement.
  • Next week we will work with powers of 10 and multiplication of decimals!
                    
Science
  • We began our final science unit on Ecosystem Restoration.  We will be answering the question: 
  • How do organisms in an ecosystem get the matter and and energy they need to grow and thrive?
  • This week we continued to learn, discuss and think about: 
  • Why aren't the cecropia trees growing and thriving?
  • A "Virtual Farm Tour" was part of our Thursday fun.  Ask your child what they saw and learned.
Literacy  
  • Word Work this week involved lessons on the specific prefixes:  pre, mis, non and ex
  • Whole Group Reading continued with work on point of view and perspective. 
  • Quarter 4 writing genre will be opinion.  This week worked on supporting our opinions with reasons and evidence within a paragraph and essay structure. 
  • All students were invited to a book share in the library to access some "gently used, but new to me" books.
