What is Up in 5th Grade?

  • We started Unit 4 this week.  We are looking at how to use ratio tables to help us solve muti-digit multiplicaiton and division problems.  
Science
  • We continued our unit this week on Matter.
  • Overarching question: What happens when two substances are mixed together?
  • Chromatography models and scientific explanation writing
Literacy  
  • working with pattern words involving  "au", "aw", "oi", "oy", "ow", "ou", and "oo"
  • finding main idea and supporting key details
  • finding theme of a fiction story and supporting details
  • answering questions explictly while quoting accurately from a text
  • backing up inferences with evidence from text
  • practicing paragraph writing
  • reading and writing around non-fiction texts
  • fantasy narrative writing and revisions
  • independent reading with reading responses

Division Using Base Ten

 Many parent wonder about how math is done now days, so we wanted to take a minute to show you how we use base ten to meet the fifth grade standards for understanding division. The following is a video of how base ten is modeled to solve three digits divided by a two digit number. 


We use base ten blocks in class to do this, but it gets pretty laborious. Here are some examples of that: 




So in order to make the Base Ten Model more efficient, we use base ten grids instead.
