What's Up in 5th Grade?

 




Moving On Celebration
Wednesday, June 8th

Math                                                                                

  • This week we worked with multiplying and dividing with powers of 10. 
  • We continued with our May number corner activities which will include a lot of graphing/coordinate grid work and conversion work using the customary system of measurement.
  • Next week we will work division problems involving money and finding area with multiplication of decimals. 
                    
Science
  • We began our final science unit on Ecosystem Restoration.  
  • How do organisms in an ecosystem get the matter and and energy they need to grow and thrive?
  • This week we continued to learn, discuss and think about: 
  • Why aren't the cecropia trees growing and thriving?
  • Next week we will start our final chapter in this unit!
Literacy  
  • Word Work this week involved lessons on the "not as common" prefixes:  fore, pro, inter, intra, pre, trans, non, over, sub, super, semi, anti, mid, ex, post
  • Whole Group Reading continued with work on point of view and perspective while we read and learned about the Tulsa Race Massacre and also synthesizing information from multiple sources. 
  • Quarter 4 writing genre will be opinion.  This week worked on supporting our opinions with reasons and evidence within a paragraph and essay structure.
