What's Up in 5th Grade?

Math                                                                                

  • For our first full week in Unit 6 we spent time discovering, describing and graphing patterns on coordinate grids. This can be tricky and we have utilize all of our math skills to figure these out! 
  • For number corner we are continuing to look at area involving whole number and decimals.  We are also measuring and putting out measurements on a line plot. 
  • Next week we will look at how to classify polygons.
                    
Science
  • What Can Determine How Much Water Is Available For Human Use?  This is the question for our next unit in science on Earth Systems.
  • Chapter 3 question: "Why is there more water vapor high up over West Ferris than East Ferris?
  • Ask your 5th grader to share their thoughts on the question(s) so far....
Literacy  
  • Word Work this week included working with inflectional endings (s, es, ing, ed, er, est).
  • Whole Group Reading involved our third ANet assessment.  
  • Next week we will take another spelling screener and look at some of the preparation materials for Forward testing that will begin after Break. 
  •  Our new genre is "Book Bowl Books".  Students participating in Book Bowl will have an opportunity to do some closer reading for their upcoming competition while also strengthening their writing skills.   Those NOT participating in Book Bowl will get a chance to read at least one of the books so that they can be an active audience member. 
  • Quarter 4 writing genre will be opinion.
