What's up in 5th Grade?

 




                                                       

Math                                                                                

  • Review days :)  Check with your 5th grader on what they are working on because each teacher has their own plan of action based on classroom needs.
                    
Science
  • We finished our last science unit!!
  • For the remainder of the year we will use this time to explore topics in social studies and science that the students want to learn more about.
Literacy  
  • Word Work this week involved some review games and taking a final spelling check. 
  • Each classroom is doing their own Whole Group Reading for the remaining weeks and writing projects.  Ask your child to share with you!
  • Quarter 4 writing genre will be opinion.  
  • Creative Writing

Moving On Celebration
Wednesday, June 8th 
1:30-2:25 pm
Randall Playground
  • 12:45 pm - Playground will be open for families to come in a find a spot to sit (bring your own chair or blanket)

  • 1:15-1:30 pm - Classes line up and come out to the playground

  • 1:30-1:50 pm - Words to the graduates and music presentation

  • 1:50-2:10 pm - Classroom student names will be announced

  •  2:10-2:25 pm - Greet and gather with families


Last day of school is June 9!! 
Remember that it is a full day...:)

Math                                                                                

  • This week we worked with division problems involving money and finding area with multiplication of decimals
  • We also took our Unit 7 Post-Test!!! 
  • We continued with our May number corner activities which will include a lot of graphing/coordinate grid work and conversion work using the customary system of measurement.
  • For the remaining weeks of school, we will be reviewing some work from this year in areas where the students may have struggled.  Every day will be a new adventure :)
                    
Science
  • We are almost done with our final science unit on Ecosystem Restoration.  
  • How do organisms in an ecosystem get the matter and and energy they need to grow and thrive?
  • This week we continued to learn, discuss and think about: 
  • Why aren't the cecropia trees growing and thriving in the soil?
  • We will finish this unit next week!!
  • For the remainder of the year we will use this time to explore topics in social studies and science that the students want to learn more about.
  • Thursday was Garden Day at Randall!  Ask your child what they did in the Randall Outdoor Garden.
Literacy  
  • Word Work this week involved lessons on common suffixes and looking at vocabulary strategies for  suffixes. 
  • Each classroom is doing their own Whole Group Reading for the remaining weeks and writing projects.  Ask your child to share with you!
  • Quarter 4 writing genre will be opinion.

LMC Information

 *Ms. Sharock has sent the following information to classroom teachers, and we would like to pass this on to you:

This will be the last week for book checkouts.  All books are due back on May 31st so that we can follow up on recovering late overdue books before the end of the year. ~ Ms. Sharock

Please also remind your student to bring in their chromebook and charger to school on June 1st so that they can be checked over prior to summer break. 5th graders will be taking chromebooks and chargers home for the summer and will bring them to their middle school in September. ~Ms. Sharock

Chromebook Wellness Checks

 

5th Grade chromebooks and chargers will have a chromebook Wellness check June 1 or-June 2nd   Students will exchange devices that need repairs and need to show that they have a charger for their device.  After the wellness check 5th grade students will keep both their device and charger for use in middle school.

  • Word Work this week involved lessons on the "not as common" prefixes:  fore, pro, inter, intra, pre, trans, non, over, sub, super, semi, anti, mid, ex, post
  • Whole Group Reading continued with work on point of view and perspective while we read and learned about the Tulsa Race Massacre and also synthesizing information from multiple sources. 
  • Quarter 4 writing genre will be opinion.  This week worked on supporting our opinions with reasons and evidence within a paragraph and essay structure.
