This week we sent home information on Celebrate Smiles that included a form for every family to fill out indicating YES or NO if you would like to participate. If you have not returned the form, please do so.

Math
- We created models to show how multiplication of fractions work.
- We worked to understand the reasoning behind multiplying by fractions and to be able to communicate this information verbally and in written form.
- We started to look at division of fractions.
- We worked with modeling fraction multiplication story problems.
- We worked with area of objects with fractions for dimensions.
- We worked with conversion of liquid measurements.
- Continue to work on those math facts at home if your 5th grader is not fluent. This is critical at this point in their math progression.
Science
- What Can Determine How Much Water Is Available For Human Use? This is the question for our next unit in science on Earth Systems.
- Specifically this week we are trying to answer the question "Why does more rain form over West Ferris than East Ferris?
- Ask your 5th grader to share their thoughts on the question(s) so far....
Literacy
- Word Work this week included working with open and closed syllables, dividing syllables, and vowel-r syllables.
- Whole Group Reading involved revisiting our last ANet assessment. We will take the next three weeks to look closely at the questions and writing samples before we take our next ANet assessment at the end of March.
- Whole Group Reading involved all the 5th grades continuing with--Never Caught, the Story of Ona Judge . This is a true story of a slave who escaped from George and Martha Washington. Ask your child to share this story with you.
- We continued to read and respond to our Survival books.
- Students were assigned their Black History Month project. Each 5th grade may be doing this different. Ask your 5th grader what they will be researching, writing, and creating for this project.
SELS/Health
- The importance of getting enough rest each night.
