Math

  • We reviewed Unit 5 learning.
  • Next week we will have a test on Unit 5. (Look for review work to come home.)
                       Specifically....
  • We worked with division involving both fractions and whole numbers.
  • We worked to create and understand models to represent division involving both fractions and whole numbers.
  • We worked with modeling fraction multiplication story problems.
  • We worked with area of objects with fractions for dimensions.

                      Don't forget.....
  • Continue to work on those math facts at home if your 5th grader is not fluent.  This is critical at this point in their math progression.
Science
  • What Can Determine How Much Water Is Available For Human Use?  This is the question for our next unit in science on Earth Systems.
  • Chapter 2 question:  "Why does more rain form over West Ferris than East Ferris?
  • Ask your 5th grader to share their thoughts on the question(s) so far....
Literacy
  • Word Work this week included working with vowel combination syllables
  • Whole Group Reading involved revisiting our last ANet assessment.  We will continue next week to look closer at how to respond to a writing sample.
  • We continued to read and respond to our Survival books. Our next genre will be "Book Bowl Books".  Students participating in Book Bowl will have an opportunity to do some closer reading for their upcoming competition while also strengthening their writing skills.   Those NOT participating in Book Bowl will get a chance to read at least one of the books so that they can be an active audience member.
  • Students were assigned their Black History Month project in February.  Each 5th grade may be doing this different.  Ask your 5th grader what they will be researching, writing, and creating for this project.
